Geraldton District Hospital, Building

ED Relocation Project

Proposed Emergency Department Relocation Project

Planning for this project started in 1999.  The original project also included several building upgrades.  The total estimated cost was in the $17 million dollar range.  Projects over $10 million require full government approval, while projects under $10 million can be approved by the Minister of Health.

In order to expedite the approval process, the Hospital submitted the Emergency Department (ED) Relocation Project of $9.9 million separately from the building upgrade projects.

Building upgrade projects were implemented and partially funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) from 2004 through 2013.  Some upgrade projects included a redesigned kitchen, new heating system, new air exchange systems, new air conditioning systems and new back-up electrical system.  A few upgrade projects are planned from 2014 through 2018; Acute Care including washroom upgrades, new roof and new water system.

The location of the proposed ED will be attached to the west end of the Acute Care (AC) unit.  An existing storage room will be replaced with a hallway to connect the AC with the ED.  The entrance of the new ED will be on the upper level in the front of the hospital.  Patient parking will be amended accordingly.

The design of the proposed ED relocation project was developed with input from Hospital staff, physicians and management, with the assistance of an architect from PBK Architecs in Timmins, Ontario.  Officials from the Capital Planning Branch of the MOHLTC are in the process of reviewing the design.  Their approval is required before proceeding to the next stage of the capital planning process.
