Public Notice: Reminder- Appropriate Use of the Emergency Department
Geraldton District Hospital is reminding the public about appropriate use of the emergency department. Due to seasonal conditions, the hospital is experiencing an increase in patients, and is asking the public for assistance by utilizing health care resources appropriately.
Emergency Departments are for extremely ill patients who require immediate medical attention. This includes symptoms such as chest pain from suspected stroke or heart attack, deep wounds that require sutures, severe allergic reactions causing swelling, difficulty breathing, eye injuries, suspected poisonings or overdose, broken bones and other issues that can or may result in loss of life or limb.
We would like to remind the public, that common illness such as colds, flus, ear aches, fever, sore throats, back to work notes and minor back pain, sprains and soreness are not considered to be emergencies. We encourage the public to have these non-urgent care issues addressed by their family doctor or local clinic.
