Geraldton District Hospital, Building

Influenza Season

Another influenza season is upon us.  The Geraldton District Hospital is obligated to protect its patients and residents.

If you are sick, please DO NOT visit patients in the Hospital or residents in the Long-Term Care unit.

Being sick includes, but is not limited to, the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Aching muscles and joints
    Cough
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • General malaise
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath

Tips to stay healthy and to avoid the spread of infection:

  • Get the flu shot.
  • Good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of all flu viruses. Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often.
  • Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home and in your car.  It needs to contain a minimum of 60% alcohol in order to be effective.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw out the tissue. Cough into your upper sleeve if you do not have a tissue.
  • Avoid large crowds of people where viruses can spread easily.  Stay home when you are sick.
  • Keep common surfaces and items clean and disinfected.

If your situation worsens, then please seek medical attention by:

  • Making an appointment with a physician:  854-0224
  • Making an appointment with a nurse practitioner:  854-0051
  • Go to the emergency department

Watch for dates and times of the local Flu Clinics provided by the Thunder Bay District Public Health Unit coming to your area.

Thank you for your cooperation.
